I’ve mentioned briefly in the past that I’m part of the Active 20-30 Club of San Francisco. The 20-30 Club is a volunteer organization that allows young professional women in their 20s and 30s to get involved in their communities. All projects seek to help underprivileged children in our area, by either project-based activities (tutoring, playground builds, mentoring) or fundraiser projects. This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to get involved in 2 completely separate projects, but both had the same goal: to make disadvantaged kids’ lives a little easier.
Kids Spree
The Active 20-30 National Project is a children’s shopping spree where 20-30 & Big Brother Big Sisters members are matched with a child to take back-to-school shopping. The mall opens early and each child was given a $150 gift card to buy their clothing essentials. Kids were also given a backpack of school supplies, and other essentials (like shampoo & conditioner). Local hairstylists were on hand to give the kids haircuts, there was vision and dental specialists giving free exams as well.
This was an amazing event. I was matched with an adorable 9-year-old girl who has been in and out of shelters most of her life. She tried on just about everything in the store and came away with 3 pairs of shoes, 1 pair of jeans, 3 t-shirts, a jacket, a skirt, and new socks and underwear. The hardest part of the day was saying goodbye as she lugged off all her new gear ready to start 4th grade with a little more stuff and a lot more confidence.
Pub Golf to Benefit Children of Shelters
With not enough time to even run home and take a nap, my club was onto it’s next project of the day: A restaurant crawl to benefit the local charity “Children of Shelters.” 5 San Francisco restaurants participated in our fundraiser and helped us raise a significant amount of donations for Children of Shelters (calculations are still being done to find out exactly how much was raise). Although children were not directly involved in this project, it gave the community a fun way to give-back. All the money raised goes directly into school supplies for the families of Children of Shelters.
